Described as possessing "natural poise and ease" and a “very fine instrument” in performances that have an "immense emotional touch," Jake is a freelance singer, teacher, and vocal animateur. Born and raised in the North West of England, he took a degree in Literae Humaniores from the University of Oxford, and during his undergraduate years sang as a Choral Scholar with the Chapel Choirs of Worcester College, as well as periods with the Chapel Choirs of Merton and Magdalen Colleges. After graduating in 2013 he took up a Choral Scholarship at Truro Cathedral, and is now a Choral Scholar at Norwich Cathedral.
His solo career continues to go from strength to strength. His credits include, J.S Bach's 'Matthäuspassion', ‘Johannespassion’, 'Mass in B Minor' and ‘Magnificat’, Buxtehüde’s ‘Membra Jesu Nostri’, Handel’s 'Messiah' and 'Theodora', Vivaldi's 'Gloria', Pergolesi’s 'Stabat Mater', and Mozart’s 'Requiem' to name but a few. His opera work includes Purcell’s 'Dido and Aeneas' and 'The Fairy Queen', as well as singing scenes as a house soloist with the acclaimed Duchy Opera company. In addition to his concert and opera work, he remains a committed recitalist, performing as part of the New Chamber Opera Studio series, the Christ Church Arts Festival, and at the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building in Oxford, as well as undertaking successful recital tours of the South coast of England. He also holds the Licentiate Diploma of the Trinity College of Music (with Distinction). He has worked with ensembles such as Hieronymus, Duchy Opera, The Amadeus Orchestra, and The Brook Street Band.
Since 2014 he has been an artist signed to Willowhayne Records, and his first solo album, "Under the Greenwood Tree", was released in the Summer of 2015.
He currently studies with Patricia Rozario, and has studied voice with Nicholas Clapton, Carys Lane, and Teresa Cahill, and has participated in masterclasses in London, Oxford, Cornwall, and Hungary with Nicholas Clapton, James Bowman (as part of the ‘Britten in Oxford’ centenary celebrations), Mark Rowlinson (Tutor in Oratorio at the Royal Northern College of Music), John Treleaven, and Justin Bindley.
Jake is very passionate about education. He maintains a teaching practice in the centre of Norwich, and works with pupils of all ages and abilities. He is also a Specialist Vocal Leader for Norfolk County Music Service and The Wharf Academy, and is part of the team devising and delivering a new vocal education strategy for Norfolk.
He is building a respectable reputation as a conductor, choir trainer and workshop leader - groups he has worked with include the Chapel Choir of Trinity College, Oxford, Cornwall Junior Choir, Cornwall Cambiata Choir, Cornwall Returners Orchestra, the award-winning Affinity Show Choir, RSCM Cornwall, the Diocese of Norwich, the Diocese of Truro, and Truro Cathedral, running a singing course for Cornish clergy, as well as participating as a singing leader in the Cathedral’s popular musical outreach scheme.
